Glenn Frey, founding member of the Eagles, died of complications from rheumatoid arthritis, Jan. 18, 2016. Following Frey's death, Don Henley, Eagles bandmate and cofounder, still in shock over the loss of his friend of more than four decades, announced that the Eagles would no longer tour.
“Glenn was the one who started it all,” Henley said. “He was the spark plug, the man with the plan. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of popular music and a work ethic that wouldn’t quit. He was funny, bullheaded, mercurial, generous, deeply talented and driven.”
A turn of fate happened at a private memorial service for Glenn Frey days after the legend's passing. Glen's son, Deacon Frey, age 24, performed some of his father's songs and Don Henley, overcome with grief, was struck by the realization that there might actually be a way for the Eagles to go on.
"After he saw Deacon at that service, Don said that 'If there's going to be a gig for all of us, I would want Deacon to be part of it".
“I’m not sure I believe in fate, but I know that crossing paths with Glenn Lewis Frey in 1970 changed my life forever, and it eventually had an impact on the lives of millions of other people all over the planet,” he continued. “It will be very strange going forward in a world without him in it. But, I will be grateful, every day, that he was in my life.”
I am writing this post because I was at the Eagles concert in Denver, CO on June 28, 2018. What a night. Don Henley's singing voice was better than the recordings I've heard my entire life. Musically they brought the house down. This was one of those life moments that I will not only remember, I will be shaped by the experience.
I have made it my life's mission to memorialize people we've loved and lost. When Deacon Frey came to the mic and sang peaceful easy feeling, not only was it as if Glen Frey was there, it was transcendent. Tears were streaming down my face as I became overwhelmed by the powerful tribute this young man was delivering on behalf of his father. Thousands of people were before him waiting to have someone fill some very large shoes and deliver the songs that are the soundtrack of their lives. Deacon Frey delivered to a standing ovation.
Note: Also covering many of Glenn Frey's songs on the Eagles summer 2018 tour is Vince Gill, one of country music's most awarded artists with 21 Grammys / member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
